How The Journey Began
Amen Oyiboke is all things self-discovery and purpose — from being a journalist, to hosting, to music and mentoring—Amen is constantly exploring ways to create legacy for the next generation.
When Amen was seven, her uncle put a cold wired microphone in her small hand and told her, “Amen, I want you to act like a reporter informing me about your Aunt’s wedding as I record you on camera.” She shook her head, looked down in amazement and agreed to follow his every cue. After five seconds, she felt the comfort of being in front of the big camera lens and flaunted her personality to the tenth power. That’s when she fell in love with telling stories on camera.
Coming from Houston, Texas, raised in a Nigerian household and a proud product of both Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and University of Southern California (USC), Amen started her journalism journey at PVAMU as a editor for the university newspaper and soon too her zeal with her for journalism to pursue grad school in Los Angeles.
Moving from Houston to Los Angeles was a big step for Amen. She knew that if she could move out of her comfort zone, she could be a better professional and a better woman. Into fresh waters and a new territory, Amen made that leap into the journalism world in Los Angeles and made a mark of her own. Memorable interviews with the late Aretha Franklin, David Oyelowo, Zendaya, Ludacris, and Devon Franklin amongst a long list of others.
She continues to change the perception of what a multimedia journalist can do. Amen has had her radio documentary about minimum wage in exotic dancing featured on LA's NPR-West and KCRW; worked for Bustle, H Texas Magazine, Pilates Style Magazine, Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper, and GOBankingRates. She’s been featured on LA’s 102.3 KJLH as a weekend guest host, Blavity, Yahoo Finance and ABC’s Localish and On The Red Carpet.
Amen is the LA chapter director of non-profit arts and entertainment organization Saving Our Daughters/Cinderellas founded by Curtis Benjamin and Keke Palmer. The program provides girls across the country from different backgrounds with the opportunities to learn and meet with young celebrities who inspire them.
